The Black Wedding Dress

On your wedding day in 2022 and beyond, you make the rules. Hell, break your own rules if you have any.

Fiona is a stylish, spiritual and sophisticated person. If she were to go for a white dress, white shoes, white this white that.. it wouldn’t feel right. She’s a rocker and actually makes me think of Billy Idol’s white wedding energy. While that is exactly what the majority of people want and envisage, she and others like her are excited by how special a black Tricker Bridal wedding dress looks. Absolutely incredible. All wedding dresses are works of art and extreme craftsmanship, but a black dress inspires completely different feelings with suggestions of opulence and enigmatic undertones of drama and mystique. Very befitting our Fiona.

Bloody hell it is difficult exposing for a black dress in a dark environment with moving subjects and showing some detail in the dress. What’s even worse is trying to shoot the dress in a very bright environment. Learning curve! Because of this I would suggest you at the very least let your photographer know you aren’t donning white. I knew in advance, and that did little to help me.. but I got it worked out after a few drips of sweat in the hotel room.

I am so very glad to have met Fiona and Danny, the black dress and all the other incredible touches that made their wedding unique and inspiring. Now the internet loves showing brides what they could do or have so take a look at these images and think again about having everything in a ‘wanderlust’ style or a ‘boho’ vibe. Do you live a ‘boho’ lifestyle? It looks incredible, but if your entire house is furnished by Next or IKEA does it really reflect you as a couple? It may very well do so go for it! What I am trying to conclude the blog with is… do whatever the hell you want. Maybe you’re not as ‘extreme’ as a black wedding dress.. but don’t feel confined by bridal magazines or pinterest boards. If you like it, go for it. Also worthy of note is that Fiona wanted full photography cover, but also a wedding film of walking down the aisle, the speeches, and the first dance. She tells me she watches the film almost daily. It’s worth doing if you are even slightly considering it!

Bruno Arsati is an internationally renowned make up artist who recently worked on the Cannes film festival. All of the ladies felt a million dollars and looked it.

Photographic implications.

Defo tell your tog. Black absorbs light and therefore behaves differently with flashes and low light situations. In bright situations it also becomes completely detail-less without completely blowing out the surroundings and sky. There are times in the day, first dance for example where it will leave you as a floating head. Which is totally awesome. Also black and white photos look quite different. I wasn’t keen on doing a lot of black and white with this dress where I would have done lots more usually. That’s a good thing in my book though!
